South Texas Native
     more info...

The Valle Verde Project is a habitat restoration and conservation plan for urban areas in Edinburg and the surrounding community. It enables Texans to contribute to water and wildlife conservation by providing wildlife habitats where they live and work. Valle Verde Nativescapes are gardens that provide the essential ingredients for a variety of wildlife, water, shelter, and space while conserving water. This is done by planting and maintaining native vegetation, installing birdbaths and ponds. The goal is to provide places for birds, small mammals, and other wildlife to feed and drink, escape from predators and raise their young.

The City of Edinburg and the Edinburg World Birding Center would like to encourage you to keep your garden and our Valley green by planting beautiful, hardy, drought tolerant native species. Not only will you save water, one of the most valuable resources in South Texas, but you will also save labor, time and money.
Included in this website you will find:
• Design tips on how to plant, as well as other features that will make your landscape attractive to both humans and wildlife.
• A plant database to help you select plants for their color, size, hardiness, and wildlife value.
• Native landscapes designs that you can download and use to create your own backyard garden (or front yard garden for that matter).
• Photos of native landscapes to help inspire you and show what homeowners and business have already created.
Updates on our Demonstration Garden in Cenizo park, which show a side-by-side comparison of a Native Garden and a “Typical South Texas Garden” in both water usage and wildlife abundance.
Once you have been through the website and are inspired to create your own native habitat, check out the downloadable “Valle Verde” Application form to certify your native habitat. Certified yards will receive a sign for your garden and recognition on this website.
Make your garden green and create a beautiful, wildlife attracting landscape that will bring enjoyment to your family for years to come!
